Do You Actually Need 30% Kava Powder?

Why a nano-emulsified 20% powder outperforms a spray-dried 30% one — and what the percentage on a spec sheet actually measures

"Do you supply 30% kava powder?" is now a common opening question we get, and it usually arrives as a firm specification. That is entirely reasonable in an industry where the quality and consistency of kavalactone extracts can vary hugely and buyers need to be precise with their dosing. The kavalactone % is often the only figure a buyer has available to compare one supplier against another.

We supply a nano-emulsified powder at 20% kavalactones. On paper that looks like a step down. In practice it is the stronger ingredient, and buyers who switch rarely go back. The reason is that a kavalactone percentage measures purity in the bag — it does not measure what the material is made of, or how much of it your consumer actually absorbs.

What the Two Percentages Are Actually Measuring

Commodity 30% powders are generally produced by taking an extract, then standardising it down onto a carrier — usually maltodextrin or a similar starch — until the assay reads 30%. The number is a target, hit by dilution. It tells you the ratio of kavalactones to carrier in the finished blend. It does not tell you the concentration of the extract before the carrier went in, what plant material was extracted, or what solvent was used to extract it.

Three of those rows deserve expanding.

  • Source — the most consequential row in the table. A 30% grade does not specify plant part, so the material may be clean lateral root, or it may include peel, stem and aerial fractions. The assay reads 30% either way.
  • Purity pre-carrier — the question a headline percentage hides. Our 20% is what a 70–80% CO₂ oleoresin becomes once a delivery system is built around it. A commodity 30% discloses nothing about the extract before maltodextrin was added.
  • Residual solvents — a formality when extraction is CO₂, which reverts to gas at ambient pressure and leaves no residue. It becomes a live question the moment another solvent is involved.

Source, delivery system, bioavailability and behaviour in water are the rows that decide most formulation outcomes. The percentage is the natural place to start — it is usually the only number every supplier publishes, which makes it the one thing you can compare across quotes. It is also the row that tells you least about how the material will perform once it is in your format.

Why Absorption Matters More Than Assay

Kavalactones are lipophilic. Suspended in a starch carrier and swallowed, a substantial portion passes through without being absorbed — which is the underlying reason commodity formats need high milligram loads to produce a noticeable effect. The number on the label is the amount ingested, not the amount utilised.

Nano-emulsification addresses that directly. What Your Customer Actually Experiences

Everything above is ingredient specification. What determines whether a brand succeeds is what the person who buys the finished product experiences — and every row in that comparison table has a consequence that reaches the consumer.

  • What the drink looks like.
    Commodity 30%: mostly starch by weight, and starch settles — sediment in the bottom of the can, an oil film on the surface, residue clinging to the packaging, and a product that has to be shaken before every serve.
    Kavain nano 20%: emulsified rather than suspended, so it disperses and stays dispersed. The last mouthful looks like the first, and a translucent format stays translucent.
  • How it tastes.
    Commodity 30%: needs a high inclusion rate to produce a noticeable effect, and that brings a large mass of starch carrier with it — chalky before the kava bitterness is even accounted for, so the carrier becomes the dominant flavour to mask.
    Kavain nano 20%: reaches the intended experience at a lower effective dose, so the inclusion rate comes down and there is less carrier in the serving to cover up. In practice that means a shorter flavour system, less added sweetener, and a cleaner finish — the difference between a product people drink because they want the effect and one they drink despite the taste.
  • How quickly it works, and how much is needed.
    Commodity 30%: kavalactones are poorly absorbed when suspended in starch, so the format compensates with a heavy milligram load — more material, more carrier, more of everything the consumer did not want, and a slower onset.
    Kavain nano 20%: emulsified into nanoscale lipid droplets specifically to improve uptake, so the intended experience is reachable from a lower delivered dose and arrives faster. The consumer notices the onset; the brand notices the cost per serve.
  • Consistency at scale.
    Commodity 30%: source material and cultivar are typically undefined, so the product quality drifts as the underlying material changes — and inconsistency kills repeat customer purchases quietly.
  • What is not in it.
    Commodity 30%: typically a solvent extract, so residual solvent is something the brand has to test for and manage. Because the grade does not specify plant part, peel and aerial fractions may be present.

The Label Arithmetic Worth Knowing

There is one more reason the 30% figure carries so much weight: it sits inside a labelling convention that makes total extract weight and kavalactone content easy to conflate.

A label reading "500 mg kava extract" is not promising 500 mg of active compounds. If that extract is standardised to 30%, the serving delivers 150 mg of kavalactones. The other 350 mg is carrier and non-kavalactone plant matter. Both figures can appear on a compliant label, which makes like-for-like benchmarking against a competitor's product genuinely difficult: a larger total extract weight can read as a stronger product when it may simply be a more diluted one.

If You Are Building an RTD, You May Want the Liquid Instead

A large share of the buyers who arrive asking for 30% powder are building ready-to-drink beverages. For that application, there is a good chance the better answer is not a powder at all.

Powder gets specified by default for historical reasons. For most of this category's commercial life, kava was only available as a powder — traditional grind first, then instant, then spray-dried extract. Buyers wrote powder into their briefs because powder was the only thing on offer. Liquid kava concentrates are recent enough that many formulators have never evaluated one, so a brief written from experience of the old market still says "powder" even when the production line would be better served by a liquid.

What to Ask For Instead of a Percentage

  • Plant part. Lateral root and peeled rootstock only. Aerial parts should be excluded entirely and peel discarded rather than processed — we cover our double-peel practice in the processing chain.

  • Extraction method and residual solvents. CO₂ leaves none. If a solvent was used, the residual solvent panel becomes a live question rather than a formality.
  • Purity before the delivery system. For any engineered format, what was the extract concentration before carriers were added? This is the question a headline percentage hides.
  • The batch assay, not the sales spec. The number you formulate against is the assay on the lot in front of you, on a Certificate of Analysis covering kavalactone profile, heavy metals, residual solvents, microbial and pesticide residues.

The Short Version

30% is a valid requirement. But it has come to serve as a proxy for quality that often overlooks underlying flaws in the product such as the plant part, cultivar, or extraction method used, and the absorption in the end user.
