The Republic of Fiji
Fiji is an archipelago of more than 330 islands in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean. Known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and lush rainforests, Fiji has been cultivating kava for over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest and most respected kava-producing nations.

The volcanic soil of Fiji's main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, provides ideal growing conditions for kava. The combination of rich minerals, adequate rainfall, and tropical climate produces kava with distinctive flavor profiles and potent kavalactone concentrations.
Fijian kava culture is deeply intertwined with social and ceremonial life. The traditional yaqona ceremony remains an important part of Fijian customs, used to welcome guests, seal agreements, and mark important occasions.

Top Commercial Export Cultivars
Kavain sources the dominant Fijian cultivars in commercial B2B export, prized for their consistent quality, reliable supply, and strong market demand.

Vula Kasa Leka
The name means 'pale stem with short internodes.' Features pale green stems densely covered with small dark green lenticels. Known for its spreading habit and remarkably consistent 4-2-6 chemotype in both waka and lewena.

Dokobana Vula
Named for the 'large pale planting branch.' Features green stems with many very dark green lenticels with raised brown centers. May develop distinctive dark triangular stripes from lower nodes. Grows above head height.

Matakaro Leka
Named for its distinctive 'scab-like' (matakaro) dark lenticels with short internodes. Features striking contrast between dark purple lenticels and green stem background. Highly regarded for its potent effects.

Dokobana Loa
The 'dark planting branch' variety. Features purple lenticels with stem pigmentation that fades toward the upper node, leaving visible green areas. This fading pattern distinguishes it from the fully dark Loa Kasa varieties.

Loa Kasa Balavu
The premium dark-stemmed variety with long internodes. Shares the striking dark purple to black coloration of Loa Kasa Leka but with notably longer internodes. Considered among the finest Fijian varieties for ceremonial occasions.
Kava Root Grades
Different parts of the kava root produce distinct grades, each with varying potency and characteristics. These grades apply to all cultivars.

Waka
The lateral roots of the kava plant, containing the highest concentration of kavalactones (>10%), making it the most potent grade. Waka is darker in color with a more bitter taste, and is preferred for its stronger cerebral effects and intense relaxation.

Lewena
The basal stump and crown root of the kava plant. While less potent than waka (<10% kavalactones), lewena is valued for its smoother, milder, and more palatable taste. Often preferred for daytime use and gentle relaxation.
